Referees

Interested in Becoming a Referee?

Youth soccer referees begin working with children at the very beginning of their athletic lives in both recreational and competitive leagues. Your main role as a referee is to encourage fair play, good sportsmanship, and fun. Your responsibilities include: Ensuring fields are safely set up, reviewing soccer players for appropriate gear, watching over the game and enforcing fair play, reporting injuries, maintaining order and appropriate conduct throughout the match.

New Referee Training

To become a referee, you will need to successfully complete an entry level or “new referee” course. The new Grassroots Referee Training Course is a 16-hour course with half of the time spent online and the other half in the classroom. It is designed to provide entry-level referee skills and information through classroom and field training for candidates. Emphasis is on preparing for grassroots program participation — including recreational and competitive games. Field emphasis is on the practice of specific procedures.

Participants must be at least 13 years old at the beginning of the clinic to attend a new grassroots referee course. Individuals over the age of 18 will be required to complete the SafeSport certification and successfully pass a background check.

Costs

There are costs associated with becoming a referee, however, you can quickly earn the initial investment back after officiating your first few games.

Fees typically include:

  • Course fees (depending on the area): $25-$35
  • Soccer registration fee: $40
  • Uniform starter kit: $40-$60

Grassroots Referee Course

Referee courses open in January and run through mid-April so the new referee can be out on the fields in spring. This course is for new, first time referees that have not been previously registered as a referee or a previously registered referee that has had a lapse in registration.

Course Requirements:
  • Complete all US Soccer required assignments in the US Soccer Learning Center
  • Create a GameOfficials account
  • Successfully complete all pre-course work
  • Attend an in-person Virtual on-line course
